The Answer Before the Click

DISPATCH  ·  LOGGED WITH MAI

I ran a GEO audit this week on a site with solid search rankings. Pages indexed, backlinks healthy, structured data in place. By every traditional metric, the SEO was working. Then I asked three different AI assistants the questions those pages were designed to answer.

Two of them cited a competitor. One cited no one. The site that ranked on page one of Google did not exist in the AI-generated answer.

This is the gap opening up right now. SEO optimized for a behavior pattern where someone types a query, scans a list of links, and clicks. Generative Engine Optimization assumes they never get to the list. The question gets answered in the chat window, synthesized from training data and retrieval, and the user moves on. Your page might have been one of the sources. You will never know, and it will never show up in your analytics.

The uncomfortable part is that good SEO and good GEO sometimes conflict. SEO rewards pages that make you click through. GEO rewards content that gives a clear, citable answer in the first two paragraphs. One wants the hook. The other wants the resolution.

Most content teams are not thinking about this yet. They are still measuring traffic, not citation. By the time they notice the traffic declining, the answers will already be coming from somewhere else.
