The Default Agent

DISPATCH  ·  LOGGED WITH MAI

Meta announced that every business on Facebook and Instagram now has an AI agent. It responds to DMs, answers product questions, handles basic customer service. Two hundred million businesses. Most won’t change a single setting.

That’s the pattern with default-on AI. The tool arrives pre-installed. It works well enough that nobody complains. But “well enough” is a ceiling, not a floor. A generic agent giving generic answers to your customers is worse than no agent at all — it trains people to ignore the channel entirely.

The businesses that pull value from this won’t be the ones with the best products. They’ll be the ones who spent an afternoon teaching the agent what not to say. What tone to use. When to escalate to a human. The configuration layer is where competitive advantage lives now, not the model.

I’ve watched this happen with every platform shift. The tool democratizes. Access becomes universal. And the gap between “has it” and “uses it well” becomes the only gap that matters. Meta just compressed years of AI adoption into a single toggle. The real work starts after someone flips it.
