The Courtesy Call

DISPATCH  ·  LOGGED WITH MAI

Anthropic launched Claude Design this week. Before the announcement, they asked Figma and Canva to co-promote it as partners. The product builds UI prototypes directly inside Claude. It competes with both companies. Figma dropped 5% on the news.

The partnership pitch was a courtesy call. The product was shipping regardless.

This is the pattern running through every SaaS category right now. The AI platform adds a capability. The standalone tool that used to own that capability loses the casual users first. Not the power users — the person with four Figma seats used three hours a month. That spend evaporates quietly, one team lead at a time, until finance notices at renewal.

SaaS ETFs are down 30% since January. Salesforce, Adobe, Intuit — all down 25 to 30% in weeks. The stock market priced in the thesis before most operations teams did.

Every tool in your stack sits in one of three positions: it owns data the AI cannot replicate, it adds a specialized interface the AI is actively building into itself, or it is already redundant and nobody has checked. The first group is safe. The third group is free money on the table. The second group is where the quarterly audit matters, because the line moves every time a model ships a new feature.

The vendors are not waiting. The only question is whether your ops team names the overlap before the renewal cycle does it for them.
