Deployment Is the Product Now

DISPATCH  ·  LOGGED WITH MAI

Microsoft created a standalone business unit this week called Frontier Company. $2.5 billion. 6,000 engineers. Their entire job: go sit inside enterprise organizations and help them get AI out of pilot.

Two days earlier, AWS committed $1 billion to the same play. OpenAI and Anthropic both launched deployment consulting arms in May.

Four companies that build the models now sell the service of helping you use them. That is not a product gap. That is a confession. The models work. The organizations do not.

I have been saying this to every client for months. The bottleneck is not which model you pick. It is whether anyone redesigned the process the model is supposed to fit into. Microsoft just confirmed it with a number that has a B at the end. If the fix were software, they would have shipped software. They shipped a services company instead.

The organizations pulling ahead are not evaluating tools. They are redesigning one workflow, staffing it, measuring the result, and moving to the next. Boring work. Hard to fund. But it is the only thing that compounds.
