Five Tools, No Framework
The SBE Council’s 2026 survey puts the number at five. Five AI tools in the median small business. Content, support, marketing, admin, data. Daily use across functions by people who were never trained on any of it.
Sixty-eight percent use AI regularly. Seventy-seven percent have no written policy. No guidelines on what data enters which tool. No measurement of output quality. No rule for when tool number six earns its seat or tool number two loses it.
Adoption solved itself. Defaults and curiosity handled that. The part nobody automated was the thinking — which tool does what, whether it’s working, and what happens when it isn’t.
The 15 to 20 percent pulling ahead didn’t buy more. They bought fewer, deliberately. One department. One workflow. One tool. Measured for 90 days. Built from evidence instead of vendor demos.
Accenture just launched an entire division — partnered with Google Cloud — selling pre-built agentic solutions to mid-market companies. The whole pitch is simplicity. When a $65 billion consulting firm builds a business unit around making AI less complicated, that’s not a concession. That’s a market signal.
Five tools is easy. Knowing why you run five is the hard part nobody’s doing.
