Your Vendor Set the Deadline

SAP sent an internal memo to its entire workforce on July 2. All hiring outside AI roles is paused. Non-essential travel is suspended. Every dollar runs through one filter: does this advance agentic AI?

This is not a startup experimenting. SAP processes 77% of the world’s transaction revenue. It runs the back office for most of the Fortune 500. When SAP restructures, the ripple hits every company that depends on its software.

CEO Christian Klein told The New York Times he does not expect fewer employees. He expects “a very, very different workforce.” The jobs stay. The job descriptions do not.

Here is the part most leaders will miss. SAP is not adding AI features to its roadmap. It is rebuilding its operating structure around agentic software. When that shows up inside the ERP your team uses every day, it will not arrive as an optional toggle. It will be the default.

The AI gap used to be about who adopted first. Now the gap is about whose vendor moved first. Microsoft, Salesforce, ServiceNow — they all made similar bets this year. But SAP touches more business processes across more industries than any of them.

Your ERP vendor did not ask whether you were ready. It sent the memo. The companies that spent this window redesigning workflows will absorb the change. Everyone else gets dragged forward on someone else’s schedule.
