Two Economies, One Budget

DISPATCH  ·  LOGGED WITH MAI

Two and a half trillion dollars in enterprise AI spending this year. Six percent of companies turned that into operational change. The rest bought licenses.

That is not a prediction or an estimate from a single outlier report. Multiple 2026 surveys converge on the same picture. Publicis Sapient found 73 percent of enterprises use AI regularly. Ten percent say it is core to how they operate. Writer’s survey of 2,400 knowledge workers showed adoption challenges increasing year over year, not decreasing. Half the C-suite called AI a massive disappointment. The technology works. The organizations did not change around it.

The split is not between companies that adopted and companies that did not. Everyone adopted. The split is between companies that redesigned a workflow and companies that bolted a chatbot onto one. On one side, McKinsey measured 6.4 hours saved per knowledge worker per week. On the other, budgets grew and outputs stayed flat.

The instinct is to spend more. Buy another platform. Hire a Chief AI Officer. The data says this does not work because the gap is not technological. It is operational. One changed process per week compounds to 52 by year end. One large transformation initiative ships zero.

Walk your floor. Ask a random employee what AI changed about their actual work this month. The answer tells you which economy you are in.
