Visibility Is the Work
Similarweb says advertisers can now see sponsored placements inside ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews, pulled from real user panel conversations instead of test prompts.
That is the part worth caring about.
The instinct will be to ask whether AI ads deserve budget. Wrong first question. Before spend, a company has to know what buyers already see when they ask an assistant for recommendations, comparisons, vendors, pricing, or next steps.
Search used to leave more tracks. Query, result, click, landing page, conversion path. AI answers compress that path. The buyer can form a shortlist before your analytics stack sees a visit. If a competitor appears in that answer and you do not, the loss may never show up as a lost click. It just becomes absence.
This is why AI visibility cannot sit only with marketing. Sales needs to know what prospects were told before the first call. Content needs to know what gets cited. Analytics needs a readout that includes answers, not only pages. Leadership needs one owner for the question: what can we actually see?
AI ads did not make the answer layer simple. They made it visible enough to manage.
That is the work now.
