The Deadline Finds the Owner

OpenAI’s Assistants API shuts down on August 26.

For some teams, that is a migration ticket. For others, it is the moment they discover a daily workflow was never really owned.

That is the part worth paying attention to.

A support assistant, sales research bot, policy search tool, or internal copilot can become important before anyone gives it a name, an owner, or a fallback. People use it because it works. Then the vendor changes the floor underneath it and the business has to ask basic questions late.

Where is this running? What does it touch? Who signs off on the replacement? What happens if it breaks for a day?

If those answers depend on the person who built the prototype remembering all the details, the workflow is not in production. It is a habit with an API bill.

Deadlines are annoying. They are also clean.

They show which AI work has been absorbed into the business and which work is still floating outside the map.
