The Mess Is Callable

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and more than 100 other organizations signed a cyber warning this week.

Most leaders will read that as a security story.

Partly. But it is also an operations story.

AI did not invent the old mess: shared logins, forgotten tools, vendor sprawl, stale permissions, unclear escalation paths, workflows nobody fully owns because they still mostly work.

AI makes that mess callable.

An agent with access can read, summarize, trigger, draft, route, retry, and touch systems faster than a team can explain who allowed it. That is not a reason to ban agents. It is a reason to stop pretending access is a settings page.

The first control is inventory.

List every AI system in use. Approved or not. Then ask: what can it read, what can it write, who approved it, who reviews the output, and who can shut it down immediately?

If the answer is “we would figure it out,” the workflow is not ready.

Cyber defense cannot live only with IT. Security can set controls. Legal can watch exposure. Operations can define process.

Leadership still has to name the owner.

The warning is not just that attackers may move faster.

It is that weak ownership will fail faster too.
